Led by José and Cristina – both University educators and specialist periodontists – and supported by our highly experienced dental hygienists, we deliver gold-standard care for patients with gum disease.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis) is an inflammatory condition caused by dental plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on the teeth. Over time, this can damage the gums and bone that support the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss if not properly managed.
Often called a “silent disease,” periodontal disease may cause no pain or obvious symptoms until it is already advanced. It is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
Common symptoms include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Swollen, red or tender gums
- Gum recession or exposed tooth roots
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Persistent bad breath or unpleasant taste
Risk factors
Gum disease can affect anyone, but there are several risk factors that increase susceptibility:
- Poor oral hygiene and inconsistent dental visits
- Smoking or using tobacco
- A high-sugar or acidic diet
- Certain medications and systemic health conditions
- Family history of gum disease
There is increasing evidence linking gum disease to other health conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

- Ask about your lifestyle and any risk factors
- Assess your symptoms and signs of gum disease
- Perform a full-mouth assessment and take any necessary X-rays
- Provide a report of findings and discuss them with you
- Share treatment options and associated costs
- Send a copy of the report to your referring dentist (if applicable)

What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that damages the gums, bone and tissues supporting your teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.
Is gum disease painful?
Not always. That’s why it’s often called a silent disease. Many patients are unaware they have it until the damage becomes more advanced.
Can periodontal disease be cured?
It can be managed effectively with professional treatment and good oral hygiene. Early intervention gives the best outcomes.
Why have I been referred to a specialist periodontist?
Your general dentist may refer you if your gum disease is complex or not responding to routine hygiene care. Our specialists have additional training and tools to manage more advanced cases.
How often will I need to visit the hygienist?
This depends on your level of risk. Some patients need to attend every 3 months, while others may be seen every 6 months or less frequently.
